Artificial Intelligence is the intelligence exhibited by machines or computer programs. In most cases, AI is used as a way to chat with a virtual assistant, such as Siri or Alexa. In its most sophisticated form, AI can also be used to power robotic devices and self-driving cars.
The first AI program was written in 1951 by Alan Turing, a British mathematician and computer scientist. It played chess by trying to find the best move for both sides, instead of just one side.
In 2017, a computer beat a professional human player at Go, an ancient and complex Chinese game, for the first time. The game is often described as “chess on steroids.”
The Future of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence will also have a huge impact on the job market. It’s estimated that 40 percent of jobs today could be done by computers in 20 years or less. Some experts say that almost all the jobs that exist today could be done by machines within a few decades.
In fact, Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, believes that artificial intelligence is “potentially more dangerous than nukes.” He thinks AI poses an “existential threat” to human civilization and is working on ways to control it.
Artificial intelligence will have a significant impact on how people live their lives. Imagine being able to check your email with your voice or having a robot help you around the house. People are already using home robots like Roomba to vacuum their homes and take care of pets while they’re away. Driverless cars will make getting around much safer and easier.
